| Children Get Ready for Summer On-line 18 July 2002 |
Thursday 18th July sees the next intrepid set of explorers setting out to patrol the Superhighway. Forty schools, up to 2,500 children, are taking part in the latest on-line activity, using the web as they take on the role of the experts. Working with local authority safety officers, the Environment Agency and police officers on-line, the pupils in their schools throughout the East of England will be working through a story with a focus on safety issues around lakes and rivers during the summer.
David Casey, Project Manager for Childnet says, "Children need to learn about important issues, and with the summer holidays coming very soon there is a temptation to play near water, this will help them to learn about the issues in a fun way, and to be able to talk with the experts who can answer all their questions."
Among the tasks involved the children will be organising a rescue on the river, writing a report for the local council and helping to prepare a lesson on water safety for year 6 at a local school.
Operation Splash is the latest in the series of on-line role plays on the themes of citizenship and safety. The activity and further information can be found on the web site at www.superhighwaypatrol.net
