About this website

This website is result of a major pilot programme carried out in February 2007 with some 400 secondary teacher trainees reviewing the Know IT All and Microsoft e-safety content as part of their teacher training programmes in Middlesex, Brighton, Canterbury and Southampton Universities.

The research was commissioned by Childnet International to identify how e-safety education could be incorporated into the current initial teacher education at secondary phase. It sought to assess the needs of initial teacher education providers in relation to e-safety education for ICT trainee teachers. The research and has been funded by Microsoft, the Training and Development Agency for Schools and Becta.

The final report recommended that an online portal should be developed with resources, information and advice, specifically to meet the needs of secondary trainee teachers and their tutors. That is what this website seeks to do.

This website also contains two resources which the researchers selected as being suitable for raising awareness of e-safety with trainee teachers. Childnet’s Jenny’s Story was chosen as the best resource for tutors to deliver directly to trainees in face to face sessions because of its high impact and ability to stimulate discussion. The full version of Jenny’s Story has been made available free of charge to tutors at ITT institutions in England along with a tutors guide. It is not recommended for use for trainees on their placements. Microsoft’s Rome Group resource has been included on this website as a possible resource for trainees to use on a placement.
