About this website
This website is result of a major pilot programme which was carried out in February 2007 with some 400 secondary teacher trainees reviewing the Know IT All and Microsoft content as part of their teacher training programmes in Middlesex, Brighton, Canterbury and Southampton Universities.
The research was commissioned by Childnet International to identify how e-safety education could be incorporated into the current initial teacher education at secondary phase. It sought to assess the needs of initial teacher education providers in relation to e-safety education for ICT trainee teachers. The research was funded by Microsoft the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) and Becta.
The final report recommended that an online portal should be developed with resources, information and advice, specifically to meet the needs of secondary trainee teachers and their tutors. That is what this website seeks to do.
It was subsequently agreed that, while it was essential to train teachers before they enter the profession, many practising teachers would also benefit from an introduction to e-safety and being shown a single place for resources, and so Know IT All for Teachers was born.
The DVD Jenny’s Story which is mentioned on this website is currently used by hundreds of schools across the UK as a classroom resource at Key Stages 3 and 4. It is also used extensively in training. The Know IT All for Teachers DVD contains both a training and a classroom version of Jenny’s Story which can be used either for self study or with pupils. Much of the content of this site has been reproduced from ‘Signposts to Safety: teaching e-safety at Key Stages 3 & 4’, with kind permission from Becta.
