Downloading

The internet has a lot of free things that you can put on your computer.

David, aged 45

David likes using the internet to look for jobs. He lives in Brighton with his larger-than-life 16-year-old, Asher. They both use the internet a lot. David’s been looking for a job and he often use the Web to search for adverts and download job application forms, which saves him the hassle of making lots of phone calls and sending letters. He can also keep in touch with people who have interviewed him by e-mail to get feedback if he has any questions to ask them. Asher is the talented one, though—if ever David needs to do anything tricky with the computer he often gets Asher to teach him how to do it.

Asher, aged 16

Asher likes using the internet to share music. He just loves music. He’s into drumming in a big way and he’s been having lessons since he was 10. Asher often downloads music from the internet through iTunes and sometimes other download websites. He also regularly shares files with his mates and sometimes uploads his drumming MP3’s to show them what he can do. Asher’s begun to use MySpace recently—and he’s built his own page which contains movies, pictures and sound files of him on the drums. He keeps it up to date and he gets lots of visitors and comments from his friends who regularly visit the site and download his music.
