Promoting Know IT All
Know IT All for Parents has been written and produced by the children’s internet charity, Childnet International with support and funding from The Department for Education and Skills. Copyright and ownership resides with Childnet.
As a charity Childnet is keen to work with other organisations to ensure that as many people as possible (both in the UK and elsewhere) can benefit from this resource and the full content from the CD-ROM is available on Childnet’s website www.childnet.com/kia.
Organisations wishing to promote the resource can use this button and code below to link to this site...

Please note: using the Know IT All badge or partnering with Childnet does not imply partnership with or support from the DfES.
Childnet has produced a small advert which organisations can use to promote KIA. For a copy of this as ready artwork please contact John at John@childnet.com who can send you this as a PDF.

The overriding principle for the distribution is that the resource must be made available free of charge at the point of delivery to the end users, (ie the CD-ROM cannot be sold) and the resource is distributed in its entirety as a CD-ROM and booklet.
The following outlines the way in which Know IT All is currently available to parents through different channels.
1) INDIVIDUAL PARENTS
If individual parents want to view Know IT All for Parents they can of course view the entire content from the website at www.childnet.com/kia
They can also order a CD-ROM through:
- Encouraging their child’s school to order the CD-ROM for free (see below)
- Directly from Childnet. Click here to order. Please note there is a charge for handling and post and packaging of £2.35
2) SCHOOLS
a) Maintained schools in England
Childnet’s funding from the DfES has ensured all maintained schools across England can order bulk quantities of the CD-ROM free of charge for free distribution to parents and use in school. To order copies ring the DfES publications on 0845 60 222 60 quoting reference no 00308 -2007 CDO – EN and they will dispatch these. Schools can also order as many copies as they can use, for example it might be that a school wishes to send a copy to every parent in the school along with the Schools’ Acceptable Use Policy.
Childnet is happy for maintained schools in England to copy the CD-ROM onto the school server as long as it is copied in its entirety and made available free of charge. Please notify John Ryan Childnet’s Business Manager at Childnet if you are doing this so we can keep you informed of updates.
b) Other Schools
Childnet is currently not funded to be able to give free copies of the CD-ROM to other schools (ie non-maintained schools and schools outside of England). However copies are available for schools to purchase in batches of 100 at a unit cost £2.00 per CD ROM plus £0.35 VAT, while stocks last. Click here to order these directly from Childnet. Please note these copies must not be sold on but should be made available free of charge. Discounts can be considered for bulk quantity orders.
Childnet welcomes discussion with Departments of Education and independent schools to review ways in which this CD-ROM could be made more widely available to their constituents.
c) Computers for Schools initiative
Childnet is happy for all ‘Computer for Schools’ computer suppliers to install the latest version of Know IT All for Parents onto the computers prior to distribution, or for the CD ROM to be included in the dispatch of these computers. Please notify John Ryan if you would like further instructions on how to do this, or need a copy of the CD-ROM.
3) HOSTING KNOW IT ALL for PARENTS ON SERVERS AND WEBSITES
If organisations involved in providing online services for schools (for example Regional Broadband providers or libraries) want to host the content on their servers, learning platforms or private networks, they can do so with agreement from Childnet as long as this is used for educational purposes only. The access of the material cannot be linked to any specific product, brand or promotion. Please contact Childnet’s Business Manager, John Ryan to discuss the arrangement and sign a partnership agreement with Childnet. This is to ensure that we can notify you of updates. There is a set up charge for this arrangement.
4) RETAILERS AND COMMERCIAL COMPANIES
Childnet is actively looking for an organisation or range of organisations to assist in us in our vision of reaching every parent. This could include making the CD-ROM available in stores, preloading the content on devices or distributing to the company workforce many of whom will be parents. Any sponsoring or supporting organisation cannot claim any endorsement of their business operation or products from either Childnet or the DfES and the distribution of the materials cannot be linked to any specific product or brand and it cannot be provided conditionally depending on the value of purchases.
Furthermore, using the Know IT All badge or partnering with Childnet does not imply partnership with or support from DfES.
Childnet can supply some stock at cost for the company wishing to embark on this distribution depending on the extent and scope of the roll-out. Alternatively Childnet can review with the distributor the costs of a new print run. Please Contact Childnet’s Business Manager John Ryan to discuss arrangements.
5) INTERNATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES
Childnet is proud to have produced an overview of the advice on Know IT All in different languages as well as British Sign Language, but there are many more languages which could be included. If you would like to discuss how KIA could be translated and made available in other languages or other parts of the world or would like to link to the language area of the Childnet website please contact John Ryan at Childnet.
